03 — World
The Tarn Basin,
before and after.
Geography
A small valley in southern Europe, unremarkable until it was not.
The Tarn Basin is six kilometres long and never more than two wide. Its lake is shallow. Its winters are mild. For four centuries it produced wool and silence, and then, for nine days in the autumn of 2031, it produced something else.
The valley is now closed to visitors. Its perimeter is maintained by an authority that does not name itself. The instruments remain in place.
